Key Topics Discussed in This Week’s TLC Coaching Call

  • Burnout defined and tips on how to heal from it (01:36)

  • Talent Attractions in today’s market (32:57)

This week’s recommended reading:

New Harvard Business Review (HBR) article, How Burnout Became Normal - and How to Push Back Against It, by Kandi Wiens, that features seven strategies to heal from burnout and get back to a balanced mindset.

Related: From our TLC Deep Dive — Stress vs Anxiety.

  • Stress is a reaction to an immediate situation; stress is what you’re feeling now

  • Anxiety is a reaction to the potential future consequences; anxiety is what you’re thinking about the future

Burnout is having stress and anxiety for long periods of time —

— an unrelenting stress, that creates fatigue, lowers performance and can demoralize us if we don’t heal or repair its symptoms.

Actions that help heal burnout:

  • Finding a “good amount” of stress - not all stress is bad; we need an amount of stress where we still feel grounded and in control, without overreacting and becoming overwhelmed by external inputs.

  • Using emotional management strategies like breathing, mindfulness, meditation and shifting your mindset towards problem-solving, rather than problem-suffering.

  • Prioritize recovery. Wiens states, “ Researchers have found that we need to fully detach from the demands of work on a regular basis in order to unwind, recharge, and recover from workplace stress,” and heal from burnout. Like a professional athlete, we need to fully disengage and let our minds (and muscles) recover from long periods of tension, use and overextension.
